Case Study: Dashboard design and implementation
Central Kids has been providing affordable and accessible early childcare education and care in the central area of Te Ika-a-Maui since 1951.
With approximately 330 staff across the motu and management based in Putaruru, Central Kids manages 55 kindergartens and early learning centres, all with separate budgets, regional managers, and head teachers.
The challenge
Central Kids utilise four key systems to manage and administer their finances, human resources (HR), payroll and client management functions. Management roles across the motu struggled to make decisions without the transparency of this data as it was mostly managed within head office, meaning reports had to be extracted by particular roles if data was required.
With a restructure about to take place and the need to allocate revenue and expenditure to the right areas, Central Kids management staff needed to harness the power of data and empower their centres to make data driven decisions. Hence, they reached out to us as business intelligence (BI) specialists to help them achieve their vision.
How we helped
Central Kids approached Resolution8 to put in place a series of dashboard reports visible to the relevant managers.
Our first task was to work with key users at Central Kids to understand their vision and strategy and identify the key metrics and individual centre requirements across all operational areas. From there we were able to develop dashboards to enable the business to understand its health, identify trends and derive actionable insights, touching base with the key users along the way to ensure we were meeting their expectations and quality checking the data as we went.
We worked on the three key management areas of the business – finance, HR, and payroll – and later added into the piece some client management data, using an agile approach, consistent communication and feedback loop.
The dashboards were done in three key phases – test, development, and of course, the final phase – to make the dashboards live and available to all required staff.
Because the dashboards are easy to use and understand, Central Kids has had a high adoption rate of staff engaging with the dashboards, allowing new ideas and improvements to come to the table. This in turn has enabled us to keep working as a team with Central Kids, to understand their vision and strategy, and continue to enhance their dashboards.
