Portfolio Management Office.
WEL Networks is an electricity distribution company serving the northern and central Waikato Region. With over 100,000 customer connections, WEL is committed to innovative and sustainable energy solutions. The Network Innovation and Performance Team was established in 2021 to develop innovative solutions that can be integrated with the traditional network management practice, to improve system sustainability, resiliency, and affordability.
THE CHALLENGE.
Following the launch of the NIP team, WEL Networks sought to manage multiple business cases alongside regular business-as-usual (BAU) activities. They identified a need for structured resources to:
- Oversee programme management across both BAU and projects
- Handle multiple project requirements, including resources, timelines, risk, and deliverables
- Provide financial administration support to the NIP team
HOW WE HELPED.
Resolution8 began collaborating with WEL Networks in 2022, first setting up a solid program management structure that allowed us to draw on a range of project management methodologies. This approach enabled us to tailor our support to fit each project’s complexity, size, and stage of development, allowing the NIP team to focus on core engineering and data science tasks while we managed project oversight and reporting. This model has proven invaluable for the newly established NIP team as they build out their processes, work plans, and resource management.
We worked closely with the NIP Manager to plan future resource needs and build a strong case for in-house project management support, setting up a framework to ensure WEL’s long-term success. We continue to support them by providing additional resources to assist with programme and project management, managing stakeholder engagement and working with the wider business.
This ongoing partnership with WEL Network’s Innovation and Performance Team is a great example of our PMO-as-a-Service (PMOaaS) model in action. WEL benefits from accessing the right level of support at the right time, with minimal lead-in time.
